It is with deep sadness that we hear of the passing of Graham Tall on 23rd November 2022. Graham's assistance with this website was greatly appreciated and his input and advice will be missed. Having written, with his brother David, four books about WGS, he was the leading authority on all things Grammar School related. R.I.P. Graham.
A note about "Ivor" and "Poppet":
Martin Sydney Cheale, aka "Ivor", was born on March 17th 1912 in Sussex and joined the school in 1947. He had married Phyllis Winifred Seabrook in London in 1939 just as the second world war broke out. Records show that he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. Also known by Ivor's pet name for her, "Poppet", Phyllis was born in London on November 6th 1905. Ivor passed away in 1986. They lived in Bedfordshire where Phyllis married Denis Bolton in 1987. She passed away in 1995 aged 89.
